Daylight Chicago Shooting Leaves Young Mother Dead, Infant Miraculously Unharme

A devastating attack on Chicago’s South Side has left a community shaken after a young mother was fatally shot in broad daylight while her infant child sat in the backseat of the targeted vehicle. Police say the shooting occurred in the 7900-block of South May Street in the Gresham neighborhood, where multiple gunmen opened fire on a moving car, unleashing more than 50 rounds before the vehicle crashed into a nearby van.12

The victims were identified as a 26-year-old woman and a 27-year-old man who were traveling together at the time of the attack. Family members later confirmed the woman as Gabryel “Gabby” Ayers, a young mother whose life was cut short after sustaining multiple gunshot wounds. She was rushed to Little Company of Mary Hospital in critical condition but did not survive. Her partner, shot twice during the same incident, was taken to Christ Medical Center and listed in good condition.2

Amid the chaos and gunfire, a remarkable discovery was made: Gabby’s baby daughter, less than a year old, was found unharmed in the backseat. Community leaders confirmed that the infant was safely rescued by first responders, offering one small moment of relief in an otherwise tragic scene. Father Michael Pfleger of St. Sabina Church stated that despite the barrage of bullets, the child was untouched, an outcome many are calling nothing short of miraculous.12

Eyewitness accounts and early investigative findings highlight the brutality of the attack. Dozens of evidence markers lined the pavement as police surveyed the damage, noting the shattered windows and numerous bullet holes in the victims’ vehicle. According to police sources, more than 50 shots may have been fired, suggesting the shooters intended to overwhelm the victims with sheer firepower.12

Community members expressed deep frustration and grief as news of Gabby’s death spread. Her godfather, Pastor Kirk Bell, voiced outrage over the indiscriminate violence, particularly because a baby was present in the car. He questioned how such disregard for life could persist and called for urgent action to address ongoing gun violence in the city.12

The crash that followed the shooting added another layer of shock to the event, though the driver of the van struck during the collision declined medical treatment. Aerial footage obtained by local media showed the aftermath: a white sedan heavily damaged, windows blown out, and evidence markers scattered across the roadway.1

As of the latest update, no arrests have been made, and investigators are actively reviewing surveillance footage and speaking with witnesses to piece together what led to the deadly ambush. Local authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward, hoping to bring answers and justice to Gabby’s loved ones.

The tragedy has renewed conversations around violence in Chicago neighborhoods, leaving residents calling for stronger intervention, more community support, and a renewed commitment to safety.

Prayers and condolences continue to pour in for Gabby, her baby, and her family as they navigate an unimaginable loss.
